Purpose & Scope
These transformative projects are reshaping the landscape of cybersecurity within the healthcare sector, ushering in a new era of enhanced cybersecurity for medical devices and medical service provision.
Collectively, SEPTON, ENTRUST and MedSecurance are propelling forward cybersecurity standards within healthcare, establishing fresh milestones for safety, reliability, and innovation. By raising the bar in terms of security protocols and best practices, they are not only ensuring the protection of sensitive medical data but also fostering an environment conducive to continued advancements in healthcare technology for healthcare provision and medical devices. The projects have come together to organise this webinar in cooperation with ECCO and the Horizon Results Booster initiatives to discuss current cybersecurity innovations in this critical sector.
The scope of the SEPTON project encompasses the enhancement of cybersecurity within healthcare centers. It seeks to bolster cybersecurity within healthcare centers, specifically targeting the security of networked medical devices. It aims to fill existing gaps in IT network infrastructure security by adopting a holistic approach. Key objectives include developing advanced solutions to protect networked medical equipment and devices, employing techniques like polymorphism for enhanced device security, ensuring secure and privacy-preserving data exchanges between NMDs through blockchain, differential privacy, and encryption, implementing a cybersecurity analytics framework integrated with machine learning for behavioral anomaly detection, and conducting vulnerability assessments of the networked medical devices. Through these efforts, SEPTON aims to provide hospitals and care centers with a comprehensive cybersecurity toolkit, fortifying their defenses against cyber threats and safeguarding patient data and medical devices.
ENTRUST sits at the forefront of digital transformation for the Healthcare domain as it moves into the next generation of Connected Medical Devices (CMDs), where the expansion of connectivity and data processing capabilities and resources at the edge have revolutionized the health sector by improving outcomes, lowering healthcare costs, and enhancing patient safety. The ENTRUST innovations not only disrupt the CMD value chain and impact all stakeholders by putting dynamic trust assessment as a new dimension of the quality of a device’s operational profile but are also a significant driver to overcome existing gaps in the security of such complex systems. The project aims to tackle the lack of cybersecurity implementations in CMDs without limiting their applicability. Its trust management architecture holistically manages the lifecycle of CMDs, starting from formally verified design-time trust models, and risk assessment processes to secure lifecycle procedures and real-time conformity certificates based on novel runtime attestation mechanisms and distributed ledgers. The added value and effectiveness of the ENTRUST Framework will be evaluated in four real-world use cases ranging from wearable and medical devices used for remote patient monitoring to high-end stationary equipment used in hospitals and clinics.
The MedSecurance project is designed to significantly enhance the security protocols within the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) by developing innovative methodologies, infrastructures, and technologies. This initiative focuses on advancing our understanding of decision-making processes in the face of diverse IoMT threats, incorporating interactions at both system and component levels. The project proposes a holistic strategy that addresses the interconnected nature of various IoMT subsystems, facilitating effective information exchange, and managing risk and regulatory impacts. The end goal is to deliver scalable and verifiable solutions for secure system engineering management that not only streamline decision-making in cyber defence but also automate aspects of cybersecurity assurance to adapt to evolving threats efficiently.

The ENTRUST project is dedicated to establishing an end-to-end trust management system for medical devices and its outputs will enhance cybersecurity features without constraining the versatility of connected medical devices. A novel remote attestation mechanism created by the project will guarantee the correct operation of devices in real-time, irrespective of their computational capabilities.
Meanwhile, SEPTON targets the enhancement of networked medical device security within and beyond healthcare centres. It takes a holistic approach, addressing gaps in generic technologies and processes related to IT network infrastructure and will deliver a comprehensive cybersecurity toolkit.
MedSecurance is developing a pioneering methodology for combined safety and security analysis within the TVRA framework, using architectural and graph-based models to understand system vulnerabilities and interdependencies. This approach will facilitate detailed assessments and trade-off analyses, supported by new metrics designed specifically for medical devices
Together, these initiatives are advancing cybersecurity standards in healthcare, setting new benchmarks for safety, reliability, and innovation.
On the event of the adoption of the draft regulation laying down measures for a high common level of cybersecurity at the institutions, bodies, offices and agencies of the Union, the AI4HealthSec project kicked off a process to provide its opinion.
